Colin Bailie, Latitude Image’s preferred partner in Ireland, showcases that while Northern Ireland can take on many names, the resounding adjective for this part of the UK is ‘enchanting.’
Comprised of Counties Antrim, Armagh, Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh, and Tyrone, one native might call Northern Ireland simply ‘The Six Counties.’ The subtext of that name isn’t so simple, however. Referencing Northern Ireland as ‘The Six Counties’ is a call to the speaker’s Nationalist beliefs, that the Emerald Isle is made up of one country only--Ireland--and that the partition of the six northernmost counties by the British in 1921 doesn’t hold. Another native, meanwhile, might call it ‘Ulster,’ thereby indicating his/her support of the continued union with Great Britain. These days, with the rise of tourism after decades of unrest known as ‘The Troubles,’ an American might come to visit what they call their ‘ancestral homeland’ as, during the 18th Century, hundreds of thousands of northern Ireland inhabitants left their homes to find sanctuary in the soon-to-be United States and became, according to a United States survey in 2000, the ancestors of 4.3 million Americans.
